Waterproof Care: Get the Basics Right
Why should you wash a waterproof jacket?
It might feel counterintuitive—washing something designed to keep water out. But over time, dirt and oils clog the fabric, reducing its ability to breathe and repel rain.
Cleaning your jacket helps to:
- Restore waterproof performance
- Improve breathability
- Extend the life of your gear
- Keep you comfortable on the move
A clean jacket doesn’t just look better—it works better.
What do I need to wash my waterproof jacket?
Before you start, make sure you have:
- A non-biological detergent or specialist waterproof wash
- A washing machine
- A tumble dryer (recommended)
- Grangers wash + reproofing products (recommended for best results)
Avoid standard detergents, fabric softeners or bleach—they can damage the waterproof membrane.
How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket?
1. Prepare Your Jacket
Brush off dirt and mud. Close all zips, Velcro and flaps.
2. Clean Your Machine
Remove detergent build-up to avoid contamination.
3. Wash on a Gentle Cycle
Use a non-bio detergent or a technical cleaner like Grangers Performance Wash. Wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle.
4. Spin to Remove Excess Water
Run an extra spin cycle to remove moisture.
5. Tumble Dry on Low Heat
This step is key—it reactivates the jacket’s water-repellent finish (DWR).
How to Reproof a Waterproof Jacket?
If water stops beading and starts soaking into the fabric, it’s time to reproof.
For best results, use Grangers Aftercare products:
- Grangers Clothing Repel (Wash-In) – restores waterproofing across the whole garment
- Grangers Performance Repel (Spray-On) – ideal for targeted areas like shoulders and cuffs
Reproofing steps:
- Wash your jacket with a technical cleaner
- Apply Grangers reproofing treatment (wash-in or spray-on)
- Tumble dry on low heat to activate the finish
This restores the outer layer so rain beads off again—just like new.
How Often Should You Wash a Waterproof Jacket?
A simple guide:
- After heavy use or muddy conditions
- When breathability drops
- When water stops beading on the surface
For regular use, every few months is usually enough.
